(1954), by Walter Bromberg M.D. compiling an in depth overview of the work of Mesmer, Braid, Charcot and others. This book gives a feel for the degree of understanding that was atained before 1900 concerning the unconscious mind. Modern psychology has abandoned some of the most profound experimental research into the unconscious mind ever done.
A book titled;
"EMOTIONS and MEMORY"
(1961), by David Rapaport compiles and evaluates experimental research done after 1900 as well as some earlier research and establishes a contemporary perspective on the potentials of hypnosis.
